Alvir & Ram

Three days of haldi, mehndi, sangeeth, pheras and dancing. Come celebrate with us.

Spring 2027

Our story

We proposed to each other

There was no surprise proposal. We bought the rings months ahead, then exchanged them casually in front of Alvir's parents and his niece.

Alvir's family is Sindhi and Ram's is Telugu. The weekend mixes both traditions, reworked for two grooms, in Zaragoza: a walkable old city halfway between Madrid and Barcelona.

Expect color, very good food, a lot of noise and plenty of dancing.

Alvir
Sindhi. Born in Singapore, raised in the US.
Ram
Telugu. Moved to the US in his early twenties.

New to Hindu weddings?

What is a Ganesh puja?

Wed 31 March · 11:00 AM

Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god, is the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings, so he is the first god invoked before any new undertaking. That's why Hindu weddings traditionally open with a Ganesh puja: a prayer, led by a priest, asking for his blessing so the celebrations and the marriage begin free of obstacles. You may also hear him called Ganapati or Vinayaka.

  • What happens. The priest chants prayers in Sanskrit while we offer Ganesha flowers, fruit and sweets. It ends with aarti, when a small lamp is waved in front of his image, and prasad, blessed sweets shared with everyone.
  • Your part. Just be there with us. Sit quietly during the prayers, and join the aarti if you'd like. There's nothing you need to know or do.
  • Shoes and dress. Shoes come off near the puja area. Indian clothes are lovely if you have them; otherwise wear something modest and colorful.

Wear color. Orange, red, yellow and green are our favorites, so wear them if you like. Please skip black.

Travel

Getting to Zaragoza

Fly into Madrid or Barcelona, then take the high-speed train. Zaragoza sits on the line between the two, and its own airport has few international flights.

Trains

Renfe, iryo and Ouigo all run the Madrid–Zaragoza–Barcelona line, with trains throughout the day. Both airports are about half an hour from their main train station by train or taxi.

Easter week

Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, three days before the welcome dinner. Holy Week is one of Spain's busiest travel weeks, so book flights and trains early.

Arrive a few days ahead and you can catch Zaragoza's Semana Santa processions.

Passports and visas

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, Singaporean, UAE and Panamanian passports don't need a visa for a short stay. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: apply as early as you can (up to six months ahead), because appointments fill fast. Ask us if you need a letter of invitation.

The EU also plans a travel authorization called ETIAS for visa-free visitors. Check whether it has started before you fly.

While you're here

Zaragoza in a free afternoon

La Aljafería

An 11th-century Islamic palace of carved arches and courtyards. If you love Mughal architecture as much as Alvir does, start here.

Plaza del Pilar

The Basílica del Pilar and La Seo cathedral share one long square by the Ebro. Look for La Seo's Mudéjar tilework, part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing.

El Tubo

A knot of narrow lanes packed with tapas bars, a few minutes' walk from the Pilar. It fills up late, like everything in Spain.

Mercado Central

The city's 1903 iron-and-glass food market. Good for cheese, olives, fruit and a coffee.

FAQ

Good to know

What's the weather like?
Early April in Zaragoza averages highs around 20°C (68°F) and lows around 8°C (47°F). Days are mild, nights are cool, and both parties run past midnight, so bring a warm layer. The local wind, the cierzo, can pick up too.
What will we eat?
The menus have no beef or pork, and there are vegetarian options at every meal. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you RSVP.
How late do things go?
Dinner is at 8 PM on Thursday and Friday. Dancing runs until 1 AM on Thursday and 2:30 AM on Friday. Shuttles will take you back to town.
Money and getting around
Spain uses the euro, and cards work almost everywhere. Zaragoza's old town is compact and walkable, with a tram line and plenty of taxis.
